Every day more panamanians depend of subsidies

Even when International agencies have recommended to countries in the region to eliminate subsidies to lower public spending, in Panama they are increased. Proof of this is that between 2009 and 2015 about 68,117 Panamanians joined the program from 120 to 65. People went from 58,442 beneficiaries in 2009, when he started the program, to 126,559 in 2015. Of these, 58.3% of beneficiaries live in rural areas and the remaining 41.7% in urban, 95.3% and 4.7% in the provinces in indigenous regions. According to the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), the participation of a greater number of people responding to the disclosure of the program and that the age for being eligible, 70 to 65 years was reduced. The 42.3% of the beneficiaries had 80 or more years of age and schooling did not exceed four years, indicating that most had not completed primary school or. In Panama, 57.5% of the beneficiaries are women and 42.5% men. In rural areas, 67.1% of the beneficiaries are women. This distribution corresponds to their status as economically inactive. In 86.6% of households, one person participates in the program 120 to 65, most in poverty or indigence. Economic assistance largely met its main purpose, help the elderly population at risk. According to the World Bank, Latin America is spent annually between 5 and 10% of gross domestic product (GDP) in subsidies.
